Someone recently sent me a chain mail which had pictures of Canadians clubbing, skinning and mutilating sealions and their pups for, as the mail said, 'fun'. And oh, the ruckuss everyone caused over it. It was sent by an American friend of mine. At first I thought maybe the comments the mail had received were because of the friction Americans and Canadians have with each other. Haha, silly me.
Let me give you an example of the type of comments people left after signing their name for some stupid petition that'll never even do anything. (When do circulation chain-letter petitions ever do?) Now of course there were some sensible ones, but there's no fun in sharing those now, is there?
THIS IS AWFUL. CURSE THOSE STUPID MURDERERS. PLEASEMurderers? For killing seals? Um...okay, then what would you call someone who slaughters cows, pigs and sheep for a living? Ah, yes, a serial killer. Of course.
HELP AND FAST.
Plz save the cutest animals!
Yes, indeed, save them for they are cute. Our reasons for saving seals aren't shallow at all now, are they? What kind of effed up logic is that?! Save it 'cause it's cute?! What if the animal in context was ugly, like those small, hairless dogs that snarl at you all the time?! Then what?! D=
OMG this is so mean -- the people who are doing thing should go to prison for
the rest of their lives!! ~'the stupid people who do they think they are'?!?

*raises a torch* Yeah! Down with butchers! Down with trying to support your family's needs! Go to hell, you evil people! Who do you think you are to kill seals?! My goodness man, kill a human instead!

Amen to that. The world's over-populated as it is, no? Let's publicly hang them in front of their wives and children because they killed an animal 'they so cute'. Aw. How mighty environmental and animal-loving we are, aren't we?

Okay, let's get one thing straight before we move on. I'm no fan of clubbing or strangling an animal to death, because it's a brutal way of killing them and my religion condemns it. But what I want to talk about here is peoples' reactions to the mail, and some fictitious content the mail contained.
1) The seals aren't killed for mere 'fun'. Every part of its body is made use of, most notably the fur and meat.
2) You're not an 'animal-lover' if you're willing to go against humans for the rights of animals. You're just as bad as them if you're blindly willing to go 'off with their heads' for killing seals. Or rather, hunting.
3) Stop the poaching/hunting/killing/torture of an animal because it's cute? No. Animals aren't boys that you'll only side with the good-looking ones. If you really need to show yourself off as oh-so-caring for animals, get a better effing reason to save them, and then comment.
And don't pick guys because they're cute.
4) There are laws against stuff like this made by a group of sensible people so stop throwing in your two-cents about how they should go to prison for the rest of their lives or get executed.

Now allow me to summarize the point of this post. The point is that yes, poaching, killing, torturing and abusing animals is wrong. But that doesn't mean we go around condemning and imprisoning every person who happens to be hunting a certain animal.
Look, no one ever locks up someone for hunting ducks. And ducks are hunt in thousands during hunting season. Seals, on the other hand, aren't hunt in thousands. Less than hundreds, actually. And now I'm rambling.
All I'm trying to say here is that sometimes humans are forced into acts like these. They have families and mouths to feed, and when you're in such a situation, your survival (and the survival of your loved ones) is more important than an animal 'they so cute'. (I'll never get over it XD)
If you want to do something, how about you stop signing jacked up chain-letter petitions, stop giving your say on every matter and STOP BUYING THE PRODUCTS FOR CHICKEN'S SAKE.
Like Yao Ming once said in some add against poaching: When the buying stops, the killing will too.
So please, wake up from your little fantasy that bad-mouthing the hunters will stop killing the 'they so cute' animals. And if you're against hunting, stop eating meat ^_^
Yeah. Let's see you do that.
OH and before I finish: If the hunters won't kill the seals, they'll be killed by killer whales. If the hunters don't kill the seal pups, they'll be killed by an older seal. So for goodness' sake, STFU.

But you're right, to some extent. The other day they were showing some whale hunters and while everyone was condemning their actions, another side to the hunt was shown where the meant was distributed throughtout the towns' people, so that even the poor had a share.
I support that, actually. Because they aren't doing it for money, but rather to feed their people.
